Race Report – Lucas Oil Series Rounds 2 & 3

March 13, 2014

It was an intense and busy March 8-9 weekend with two rounds of racing in two different cars for DragonFire’s pro driver Ken Benson. Throughout the weekend, both racecars performed great and Ken was able to work his way to the podium both days!

Unlimited UTV Race Reports:

During qualifying on Saturday morning for Round 2, Ken put his RZR XP 900 into the 3rd starting position. Saturdays Unlimited race was a good one with Ken and fellow DragonFire team driver Hans Waage battling up front. Just before the half way point mandatory caution, Ken’s RZR 900 broke a rear CV joint leading to the loss of the related axle. Even with the set back and power to only 3 wheels, Ken drove hard to put his RZR on the podium in 3rd place behind his teammate Hans who finished 2nd.

For round 3 on Sunday morning, Ken qualified in the 3rd position once again. Through another hard fought and clean race, Ken finished in 2nd place with fellow DragonFire driver Hans Waage who finished 1st. This 2nd place finish put Ken in the lead for the season championship point’s standings after 3 rounds! It’s clear that Ken has a competitive car in the unlimited class this season and we are looking forward to him pushing forward to stay on top of the podium.

SR1 Race Report:

The SR1 racecar felt great for Ken in his second race as he was still getting the hang of the power and setup in the new DragonFire & Weller Racing built car. Unfortunately in Saturday’s race, Ken got tangled with a friend and fellow racer which led to a violent 8 roll crash. Luckily Ken’s car stayed on all 4 ITP tires and came out with only minor damage. More importantly his fellow racer was able to walk away from the incident in good health. This horrible crash shook Ken up in multiple ways and set him back, but he was able to carry on and finish the race in the end to salvage some points for the season.

For round 3 in the SR1 car on Sunday, Ken was happy to start the day fresh and put Saturday’s incident behind him. Still a bit reserved due to the accident, Ken went out with the main objective of driving smooth and clean to finish the race. He did just that and was able to finish in 4th place, just missing out on 3rd by a car length on the finish line jump.

The DragonFire race team would like to thank all of the key sponsors who are helping make this season a successful one:

Weller Racing / Elka Suspension / ITP Tires / HiPer Wheels / Dirty Dawg Performance / Royal Purple / Gates Drive Belts / Wolf Designs / Rockford Fosgate
