Team DragonFire Lights Up Lucas Oil Night Races!

Team DragonFire lights up the night! Looking to beat the heat, Rounds 5 & 6 of Lucas Oil AZ Regionals were held at night under the lights at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park this past weekend. The spotlight was on DragonFire in both UTV Unlimited and Production 1000 classes as the team pulled off a clean sweep of both classes! Defending Unlimited Class champ Ken Benson switched up to Production 1000 for this season, and made the move pay off splitting wins with the DragonFire newcomer Bobby VanBeekum, while long-time DragonFire supported racer Hans Waage swept the Unlimited class in Benson's absence.

Round #5 Production 1000

A beautiful day was a bit misleading when the night became quite the roller coaster ride for Ken Benson as he went from DNF to the top of the box! Heading into the evening program Ken was looking forward to competing in his all new Can-Am Maverick X ds 1000 racer. Qualifying in the middle of the pack meant Ken had his work cut out for him when the green flag dropped. Driving like a man possessed, Benson blasted past many of the racers and found himself battling with the top 5 in short order. At about the halfway point Ken hit a jump only to see his tire pass him by. A fluke failure of a rear stub out shaft on the axle allowed the tire and wheel to break free from the car, bringing Ken’s race to a screeching halt. This left the door wide open for Bobby VanBeekum who was blazingly fast. Bobby's top speed was literally just a tick under 67 mph… 66.935 to be exact.

Round #5 Unlimited UTV

While Benson was bumming and VanBeekum was winning, wily veteran racer Hans Waage was saving the best for last, literally. He set his fastest lap of the race on the last lap pulling away for the win in the Unlimited class. Way to go Hans!

Round #5 SR1

Bummed about his Production 1000 DNF, Benson was determined to make something happen in the SR1 class. Ken found himself in the 7th qualifying spot with the best-of-the-best SR1 racers in his way of a win, including Jason & Corry Weller, the creators of the class. An all out dogfight ensued at the green flag as these racers were all dicing to get out front and away from the nasty roost of SR1. Ken was making up ground and mixing it up with the leaders when “POP!”  — the chain gave out, leaving him stranded trackside for the second time on the night.

Round #6 Production 1000

What a difference a day makes! With fire in his eyes, Ken was determined to make up for the night before. Quickly the race became a two-car fight between Ken and fellow DragonFire driver VanBeekum. Back and forth the drivers diced trying to find the edge needed to get out front. Ken kept the pressure on throughout the race and was able to capitalize when VanBeekum broke… leaving Benson to cruise to the victory. This is the first win Ken has had in his new Can-Am racer but it won't be his last.

Round #6 Unlimited UTV

Once again the limelight was on Team DragonFire as Hans Waage was looking to double up his win total. In a carbon copy of Round #5, Hans uncorked his best time on lap 10 and led the field to the checkers. There is no replacement for displacement… or experience and Hans has both in spades in his former Baja-racer turned short-course car!

Round #6 SR1

Again the stacked field of talent made for an interesting race as nearly every driver in the class had an extensive SR1 resume. Ken fought hard throughout the race and was able to stay up with the front runners finally finishing in 7th place.

When the dust settled, a DragonFire driver was on top of the podium for each of the Production and Unlimited UTV races for the wild weekend at Wild Horse Pass. Talk about "Feeling The Heat!" DragonFire is red hot going into the summer break! Next round of the Lucas Oil Off Road Regionals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park will be September 11th. Click here for more details:
