WILD WEEKEND AT WILD HORSE PASS

March 04, 2015

DragonFire Racers Bring The Heat!

Plenty of Side-X-Side racing action went down in the Phoenix area over the weekend! The opening two rounds of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Regional series kicked off at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, while WORCS round 3 went off at nearby Canyon Raceway. Not only did DragonFire-sponsored racers do well, but we stepped up as the title sponsor for the Production 1000 UTV Class at Wild Horse. The class was a big hit with racers and fans alike, and helped set some attendance records for the Lucas Oil Arizona Regionals. Despite some teething pains DragonFire racers put in some red hot performances at both Wild Horse and the WORCS race… the 2015 season is here, time to #FeelTheHeat!

Ken Benson – Production 1000 UTV & SR1:

New for the 2015 season, the DragonFire team just finished building a Can-Am Maverick X ds short course racer that was unveiled at Wild Horse Pass over the weekend. The build came down to the wire, but was completed in time for the double-header opening round. Unfortunately there was no time for testing leading into the weekend — this was literally the first time the new racecar had been fired up by Pro racer Ken Benson. Mechanical and suspension/steering issues were a challenge throughout the weekend, but Ken was able to settle in and drive the new Maverick to a 4th place finish in Saturday's opening round. A clutch component failure during qualifying on Sunday morning forced the team to miss Round 2, however. Frustrated but determined, the team is going back to the drawing board to work out the bugs and get everything dialed in for the rest of the season.

Bobby VanBeekum – Production 1000 UTV & SR1:

While Benson was suffering some teething pains, Bobby VanBeekum's well-sorted RZR XP 1000 was the machine to watch! Bobby is one of the originators of UTV racing and always puts on a show for the fans. DragonFire is happy to help support his racing efforts this year by outfitting his racecars with our SFI 5-Point Race Harnesses, quick-release steering wheel kits, number plates and PyroPak ignition controllers. Bobby piloted his Muzzy-powered XP1K to 1st place finishes in both legs, sweeping the DragonFire Production 1000 UTV class for the weekend! Bobby had a mixed bag in his SR1, though. He had some bad luck on Saturday and lost a wheel, but fought hard on Sunday’s round 2 race and finished on the podium in 3rd spot!

Hans Waage – Unlimited UTV:

Long time DragonFire sponsored racer Hans Waage proved that he is in it to win it this year. Like VanBeekum did in the Production Class, Hans made a clean sweep of the Unlimited UTV class at Wild Horse. Hans has his DragonFire-sponsored Nessie car dialed in and with his 1-1 finishes at the opening double-header, has put himself in a position to dominate this season in the Unlimited UTV class.

Elizabeth Bash – WORCS Womens & Production 1000 UTV:

New to the DragonFire team and UTV racing in general, Elizabeth Bash is not your ordinary rookie racer. Bash is making the transition from the Pro Women’s MX ranks and her X-Games appearances into a RZR XP 1000. Her DragonFire-backed machine is outfitted with RacePace bumpers and nerf bars, among a slew of other race worthy essentials. Elizabeth was busy this weekend doing double duty. On Saturday she competed in the WORCS Women’s Side-X-Side class (new for 2015). She drew a 2nd row start, but pulled the holeshot and ran a clean race to finish 5th overall out of 14 cars in the class. On Sunday Elizabeth decided to race short course to get some additional seat time in her new RZR. She finished 5th for the afternoon and was visibly more and more comfortable with each lap. Definitely a good step in the right direction and learning experience for her as she continues to prep for next weekend’s SoCal Regional Lucas Oil races at Lake Elsinore.
