Race Report – Lucas Oil Series Rounds 4 & 5

May 23, 2014

The pressure was on this past weekend with double points on the line. Night races on a new, tight and technical Lucas Oil track at Tucson International Raceway lead to podium finishes in both classes for Dragonfire pro driver Ken Benson!

Unlimited UTV Race Report:

Ken was able to put his RZR XP 900 into the 3rd qualifying position for Friday’s round 4 race. The field was inverted before the start, putting the unlimited cars behind the stock class which lead to great racing. Benson drove hard and worked through the pack putting himself on the podium in 2nd place overall. The round 5 Unlimited UTV Race was almost a repeat of the night before with bumper to bumper racing and another hard fought 2nd place finish. Both 2nd place finishes earned Ken valuable points and kept him in the hunt for the series championship.

SR1 Race Report:

Going into the weekend, key suspension and shift linkage changes were made to Benson’s SR1 racecar. It was clear that these changes directly resulted in a much more competitive setup and a more comfortable Benson. After qualifying 3rd for Friday’s round 4 race, Ken found himself battling at the front of the pack and in the hunt for a podium finish. Hanging tight in 3rd place with 5 laps to go, the back right wheel of the car failed ending this once promising race. Although not finishing was frustrating, Ken did earn needed points and gained confidence with the new setup.

For round 5 on Saturday, Ken started off in 6th position and diligently worked his way up to 3rd. A red flag restart lead to Benson being incorrectly shuffled back to 5th due to competitors driving around a car on fire. With four laps to go and some serious work cut out for him, Ken was able to grab gears and stay smooth driving to a 3rd place overall finish! This marked his first ever podium finish in the new SR1 car and proved that he has what it takes to run with the best in this ultra competitive class. The 3rd place finish launched Benson from 8th to 3rd place in the SR1 Championship points standings putting him in a great position to battle it out to the end for a title.
